Seafood Task Force Dives Deep Into India's Complex Shrimp Supply Chain - Sep '25
INDIA - The Seafood Task Force (STF) is working with its members supplying and buying from India to navigate the complex shrimp supply chain, as part of the association’s wider plans to engage with fishing vessel actors. Particularly those who are supplying marine ingredients for shrimp feed, in order to better understand how they operate.
Major strides have already been made in advancing social accountability within India’s shrimp feed supply chain, despite the industry’s complex and fragmented nature.
India’s feed supply chain to fishing vessels remains nascent and largely unorganized, with limited transparency, awareness, and exposure to social accountability practices. Many STF India members face challenges in exerting sufficient leverage across their feed supply chains.
Since expanding into India, STF members and leadership have actively engaged with key stakeholders, navigating the complexities of the supply chain in order to establish connections with fishing vessel owners. Remarkably, within the first year of STF’s presence in India, this proactive approach has successfully opened access to vessels previously difficult to reach.

Through numerous STF-led assessments, these efforts have provided valuable insights into current social accountability practices among fishing vessels supplying marine ingredients for shrimp feed. This foundational progress has laid the groundwork for STF to launch targeted capacity-building programs aimed at raising awareness and mitigating social accountability risks across India’s shrimp supply chain, including at the fishing vessel level.

STF Executive Director, Martin Thurley said:
“Our progress in India demonstrates what can be achieved when industry members and stakeholders come together with a shared commitment to transparency and responsibility,” said Thurley. “By opening doors to fishing vessels and gaining first-hand insights, we have laid the foundation for meaningful capacity-building programs that will raise awareness, strengthen accountability, and drive lasting improvements across the shrimp supply chain.”
The STF remains committed to fostering responsible practices and building a more transparent, accountable and sustainable shrimp industry in India.

About the Seafood Task Force:
The Seafood Task Force (STF) was established in 2014 to restore global confidence to trade, following concerns about social and environmental abuse in global tuna and shrimp supply chains. It is made up of over 50 major retailers, brands, food service companies and their supply chain partners.
The STF drives supply chain oversight at scale, pioneering a pro-competitive approach that makes it easier for its members to meet international standards and growing due diligence requirements.
The STF is a US-based, not-for-profit trade association established for the seafood industry by the seafood industry. Its vision is a future where its members’ seafood supply chains are fully traceable, free from the risk of human rights violations and free from environmental degradation.
